Despite its size, there is no shortage of things to do in Asheboro, North Carolina. In fact, it is one of North Carolina’s biggest tourist destinations. North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo is located in Asheboro, and is one of the largest natural habitat zoos in the world. The zoo spans over 500 acres and is home to more than 1,600 animals. Visitors can see animals from all over the world, including lions, elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas, giraffes, zebras, grizzly bears, polar bears, bison, cougars, and more. It’s one of the biggest attractions in all of North Carolina, attracting millions of visitors every year. The park also hosts a number of educational programs and events.

North Carolina Aviation Museum

The North Carolina Aviation Museum is located on the grounds of the Asheboro Regional Airport. It is is dedicated to preserving the state’s aviation history, and it features a variety of exhibits on the subject. The museum has a large collection of vintage aircraft, as well as uniforms and other memorabilia. You will also find interactive exhibits about the history of aviation and a flight simulator. With free admission for kids and only $5 for adults, the North Carolina Aviation Museum makes for an affordable family outing.

Birkhead Mountains Wilderness

Birkhead Mountains Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The wilderness is part of the Pisgah National Forest and surrounds the towns of Asheboro and Archdale. It is named after the Birkhead family, who were early settlers in the area. At over 20,000 acres, it is a great destination for camping, picnicking, fishing, and hunting. You can also explore over 30 miles of hiking trails featuring a variety of plant and animal life. Common animals include white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, and bobcats. Birkhead Mountains Wilderness is also home to the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

Uwharrie National Forest

At over 50,000 acres, Uwharrie National Forest is over twice the size of Birkhead, and much more popular. Uwharrie and Birkhead are adjacent to each other, so you’ll find much of the same wildlife. That makes Uwharrie a great place for camping, picnicking, fishing, and hunting as well. However, it also offers a lot more. Uwharrie is one of the region’s best destinations for OHV trails. You’ll also find horse trails as well. It even has a frisbee golf course. Visitors often comment on how well-maintained the park is. Only 30 minutes from Asheboro, the extra driving time is worth it to many outdoor enthusiasts.

American Classic Motorcycle Museum

The American Classic Motorcycle Museum hosts one of the largest private collections of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the United States. It features bikes as old as 1936, including over 40 built before 1980. In addition to all the vintage bikes, you’ll find a variety of advertising, memorabilia, and other artifacts. It even has a complete dealership from 1949. If you’re visiting for the day, be sure to grab a bite to eat at Heritage Diner. The two-story museum also features a full-service shop that specializes in classic restorations. It also partners with Randolph Community College to offer a Harley-Davidson restoration course.

Richard Petty Museum

North Carolina’s largest private museum, The Richard Petty Museum is a must-see for any NASCAR fan. It features a collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the life and career of one of NASCAR’s all-time greatest drivers, called the “King of NASCAR.” Visitors can view things like Petty’s race cars, trophies, personal belongings, and even the home where he grew up. You can also get an up-close look at the famous Daytona 500 trophy. The museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits, making it a fun and educational experience for the whole family. It is also the site of Petty’s Garage, a fully operational speed and restoration shop specializing in restorations, aftermarket upgrades, engine builds, and performance parts.

Seagrove Pottery Shops

The Seagrove pottery scene is one of the coolest things to check out in the Asheboro area. Seagrove is a small town located just outside Asheboro known for its pottery. The potters here have been perfecting their craft for generations, and it really shows in their work. Visitors can browse over 100 different pottery shops, watch demonstrations, and even try their hand at making their own pottery. Collector’s Antique Mall

Located in the heart of downtown Asheboro, the Collector’s Antique Mall features almost 100 dealers. This 35,000-square-foot mall contains three retail spaces. Shoppers will find antiques of all types, such as fine wood furniture, primitives, mid-century housewares, and fine jewelry. You could easily spend hours perusing the vast collection. In addition to the selection, visitors often compliment the organization of the store and its staff (some of whom have been with the mall for over 20 years). The Collector’s Antique Mall is also known for its creative window displays during the holiday season.
